The airport was already surrounded by the town of Machala by 2000. Further unofficial urban encroachment caused the airport to close in Dec 2009. Like other closed airports in Ecuador (and Germany), it was redeveloped as an urban park and sports centre, with the runway becoming part of the Machala transport network.
It was re-opened in Mar 2017 as Parque Zoila Ugarte.
