From 1961 the French air force established a detachment with fixed wing aircraft on the airfield. In 1962 is join by small airfield named Fort de France (BA365). In 1966 the first helicopter arrived. 
As part of the A de lA overseas drawdown, on 17 Jul 2012, Lamentin was stood down from full BA365 status and French Air Force detachments will now be on an ad hoc basis.
