Work began on a strategic western Atlantic base for the Royal Navy in 1809. It was known as the North Atlantic and West Indies Station until 1951 when the Royal Navy withdrew, although the naval base remained open until 1995, when it was handed over to the Bermuda Government.
It is now a popular tourist heritage site.
