The Fénix Offshore Gas Project is one of Argentina’s most significant recent natural gas developments, located offshore in the Austral Basin, north of Tierra del Fuego. Discovered decades ago but developed only in the 2020s, Fénix was promoted as part of Argentina’s strategy to offset declining gas production and reduce energy imports. Operated by TotalEnergies with partners Wintershall Dea and Pan American Energy, the project features an unmanned offshore platform tied back to existing onshore infrastructure near Río Grande, enabling faster deployment and lower emissions. Production began in 2024, supplying natural gas to the national grid and reinforcing Tierra del Fuego’s long-standing role as a key hub of Argentina’s southern hydrocarbon industry.
