Horns Rev 1 OWF consists of 80 turbines in c 5-15m of water on the Horns Reef, spread over 21 sq km, commissioned in 2002, with a remote control centre in Esbjerg.
Horns Rev is one of Denmark’s pioneering offshore wind projects, located in the North Sea off the country’s west coast. The first phase, Horns Rev 1, was commissioned in 2002 and became the world’s largest offshore wind farm at the time, consisting of 80 turbines with a total capacity of 160 megawatts. Its success proved the feasibility of large-scale offshore wind in harsher sea conditions, paving the way for global expansion of the industry.
Subsequent developments, Horns Rev 2 (2009) and Horns Rev 3 (2019), expanded the site’s overall capacity to more than 1,200 megawatts, providing clean electricity to over a million Danish households. The Horns Rev complex remains a cornerstone of Denmark’s renewable energy network, showcasing the country’s long-term commitment to offshore wind and its ability to innovate in challenging maritime environments.
