Waterloo Air Terminal was opened in 1953 as a central London checking-in point for London Airport. British European Airways operated a short-lived helicopter service using S-55 fitted with floats, from the site until c 1954, when this was stopped and a coach-only service was offered to Heathrow until 1957.
Due to traffic congestion in central London, the Waterloo site closed in favour of the West London Air Terminal between Kensington and Hammersmith, where the road-only service was quicker.
