This original ground level helipad was opened in 2000, c 150 m from the A&E department. By c 2010 it had become clear that restrictions of the site and emerging new regulations meant it would need to be replaced, to enable increased use and 24 hour operation. A temporary helipad was built while funds for a permanent solution were sought. By mid 2013, this site was being redeveloped for use as a staff car park.
