Australia Dept.Defence, May 28, 2018 - Australian Army Aviation aircraft are providing essential rotary wing support to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Multi Role Helicopter (MRH90) aircraft and personnel from Townsville's 5th Aviation (5 AVN) Regiment have temporarily relocated to Brisbane to assist QPS with security tasks requiring rapid mobility.
5 AVN are conducting aerial surveys of landing sites around the Gold Coast as well as aircraft familiarisation training with QPS Special Emergency Response Teams (SERT).
Training has included on-load and off-load drill rehearsals to ensure 5 AVN and QPS SERT are able to smoothly integrate with one another should the need arise.
Rotary wing support provides the QPS with additional capacity to respond to situations requiring troop movement or air lift, while reducing pressure on Brisbane's road network during the Games.
The Australian Defence Force's support to the 2018 Commonwealth Games is part of the Whole of Australian Government contribution to the security of the Games.
Defence has extensive experience providing security assistance to major national events including the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2014, the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, and other major sporting events.
