Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence, August 16, 2022 - The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters purchased by Lithuania from the United States were delivered in early August from the Lockheed Martin factory to a modification facility located in Huntsville, Alabama.
Three helicopters have already been delivered for further modernization, and the fourth is scheduled to arrive at the end of August.
Lithuania is acquiring the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the U.S. Government under a 2020 agreement signed between the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the U.S. Department of Defense. The contract covers four helicopters for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, along with additional equipment, spare parts, training, repair, and logistics packages.
According to Minister of National Defence Arvydas Anušauskas, Lithuania will receive the first two fully equipped UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters in 2024, once the Lithuanian Armed Forces have personnel—pilots and ground maintenance specialists—fully trained to operate the new platform, as well as the required maintenance and ground-support equipment.
The new helicopter platform will completely replace the aging Soviet-era Mi-8 aircraft currently used by the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The operational life of these helicopters, now approaching four decades of service, has been exhausted, and their continued operation has become increasingly difficult.
The future helicopters of the Lithuanian Armed Forces are medium-sized, highly versatile aircraft—among the most widely used and best-proven of their kind in modern conflicts over the past decade. They will significantly enhance the combat capability of the Armed Forces, improve the quality of military training, and enable the faster, safer, and more precise execution of both peacetime and combat missions.
Fast, agile, and efficient, the UH-60 Black Hawk will also allow Lithuania’s military to respond much more rapidly to requests for assistance and to provide essential support in search-and-rescue missions. The Air Force’s helicopters are deployed to save lives at sea, locate missing persons, transport donor organs for transplantation, and assist in firefighting operations.
