Helis, March 02, 2020 - French helicopter services provider Heli-Union is participating in Lebanon's first ever offshore drilling campaign with two of its AS365N3 Dauphin helicopters.
In a ceremony held February 27 aboard the drilling ship Tungsten Explorer, Lebanon’s president Michel Aoun inaugurated the exploratory campaign in the Mediterranean Sea.
The drill ship Tungsten Explorer, built in 2013 in South Korea and currently registered in the Bahamas, will be conducting first operations 30 km ~ 18 miles offshore from the capital Beirut.
This first offshore oil and gas drilling contract was awarded in 2017 to an international consortium led by France’s Total, Italy’s ENI and Russia’s Novatek in 2 of 10 blocks targeted at 2,500 m ~ 8,200 ft below the sea bed.
The exploration area is in within the Levant Basin. A number of big underwater gas fields have been discovered since 2009 with some of them near a disputed marine border with Israel.
