Helis, August 15, 2023 - On August 9, PZL-Swidnik, a subsidiary of the Leonardo Group, received the first of four AW101 helicopters for the Polish Navy.
All four helicopters are scheduled to be delivered by end of this year.
In 2019, Poland entered into a deal with Leonardo for the acquisition of four maritime aircraft, designed for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. This agreement was reached after the cancellation of the planned purchase of Airbus H225M helicopters.
Originally intended to include eight helicopters, the order was later reduced to four. These helicopters are replacing the aging Soviet-era Mi-14, an amphibious derivative of the Mi-8/17 family.
The AW101 is a highly versatile helicopter, capable of accommodating up to 30 passengers and performing all-weather missions.
Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak stated In a tweet “Today we sent an invitation to negotiations for the delivery of 22 multi-role AW101 helicopters, which will soon replace post-Soviet models.”
This recent announcement follows the signing of a $2 billion contract in July for the procurement of 32 AW149 helicopters, which will be locally manufactured by PZL-Swidnik.
