Helis, April 21, 2021 - In a previously undisclosed March 25 document from the U.K.’s embassy in Washington was revealed a us$ 2 billion sale for 14 Boeing Chinook helicopters for the Royal Air Force.
“ Acknowledgment that the UK Government wishes to extend its Chinook Vertical Heavy Lift capability by proceeding with the acquisition of quantity fourteen (14) new build Chinook H-47(ER) helicopters”
These new aircraft will replace older airframes in the RAF fleet.
The Boeing Chinook is a large twin-engined heavy lift helicopter in use around the world but the US Army and the RAF are the largest operators. The RAF received its first Chinook in 1980 and about 60 are in operation nowadays.
According the document, giving the current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, the UK needed to "reconsider the expenditure profile" of the fleet renovation plan.
Production of new Chinooks is set to start in 2023 with the expected delivery completed by 2030
