Operation Barracuda

04-feb-67

guinea-bissau Gã Formoso

Launched on 4 Feb 1967, the operation was a riverine and airborne assault to guerilla positions on the S bank of the Geba River, opposite Bissau. Here, anti-aircraft positions had been established which threatened the safety of operations from Bissalanca, some 23nm to the W.

In co-operation with FAP Fiat G.91 and T-6G, six Alouette III of Esq 122 inserted several waves of Paratroopers in the morning, while more Paratroopers and Fusilleiros were landed at the riverside near Gandua Porto (to the W) from the Marinha landing craft Alfange. Two more Alouette III were used as Gunship support for the insertions, while the ninth was held on standby at Bissalanca for casualty extraction.
