Operação Samurai

13-nov-66    to    23-nov-66

guinea-bissau Caiar and Como Islands

The islands in the south of Guinea-Bissau along the border with Guinea had been infiltrated by PAIGC insurgents and they declared the area a Liberated Zone, where they consolidated their grip on the local inhabitants.

Following a period of low-level activity by PAF Fiat G-91s, the Centre for Photographic Reconnaisasance at Bissalanca had developed a good understanding of the disposition of the insurgents across the region. Operação Samurai was planned for mid November, when the new Moon would give darkness for the start date.

After 3 days of night and day bombing c 220 troops were dropped into the area by Dakota and c 130 were inserted by the recently arrived-in-theatre Alouette III of Esq 122. The area was cleared after 10 days of fighting.
