Formed in 1956 as part of the Ministère de l Intérieur, it gradually grew from 2 bases equipped with two Bell 47G. As a third base was inaugurated and the first Alouette II began to arrive, the Groupement d Hélicoptères was formalised on 19 Jun 1957. In 1962, the first Alouette III was acquired and during 1971 the last Bell 47 was retired.
Civil Protection was re-structured in France and during 1976, the quasi-military Sécurité Civile was separated out, leaving the Protection Civile as a largely volunteer, civilian organisation.
