Sponsored as an European Defence Agency (EDA) initiative to boost development of naval unmanned platforms, Leonardo is the coordinator and the contracting authority of 42 partners companies from 15 countries of the OCEAN 2020 project.
The OCEAN (Open Cooperation for European mAritime awareNess) 2020 goal is the enhancement and the integration of various types of unmanned platforms (fixed wing, rotary wing, surface and underwater) with the command and control center of navy ships and providing data exchange via satellite with command and control centers on the ground.
The first sea demonstration took place on November 20-21, 2019 in the Gulf of Taranto led by the Italian Navy
The second sea demonstration was coordinated by Saab and took pace August 2021 at Hano Bay, Sweden in the Baltic Sea
