Founded in 1915 as the Texas Forest Service, Texas A&M Forest Service is a member of The Texas A&M University System and serves as the state's lead agency for wildfire response, forest management and incident support. For decades, the agency has relied primarily on contracted aircraft and interagency aviation resources to support wildfire operations.
In 2026, it launched a state-managed wildfire aviation program with the acquisition of its first two SUBARU Bell 412EPX helicopters to be delivered in late 2027, marking the beginning of an in-house rotary-wing capability.
The "A&M" in Texas A&M originally stood for Agricultural and Mechanical. Founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the university was established under the Morrill Land-Grant Act to promote education in agriculture, engineering and military science. Today, "A&M" is retained as part of the institution's historic name and no longer serves as an official abbreviation.
