Established 1971 by Sheriff Office, the VCSD Aviation Unit started with one Bell 47 and grow to nowadays four Hueys ( 205, UH-1H, HH-1H and 212 ) and three Black Hawk helicopters.
In 2009, the Fire District and Sheriff's Office entered into an agreement in which the Unit became a joint venture.
Flight crews are trained in night vision goggle operation, scuba diving, swift water rescue, and emergency medical procedures. They are supplemented on medical/rescue missions by qualified medical personnel consisting of physicians, nurses, and paramedics. Typical missions for the Air Unit includes:
- Search and rescue missions including mountain and water rescue
- Support for agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard, State Lifeguards, etc
- Emergency medical services (EMS) flights
- Firefighting
- Surveillance
- Crime scene photo flights
- Marijuana eradication
- Patrol support missions

May 22, 2021 · Ventura County Aviation Unit recently received 2 Sikorsky UH-60L Firehawk customized by United Rotorcraft (Air Methods). Both helicopters are equipped with Axnes Polycon Next Generation (PNG) wireless intercom systems (ICS)
Jul 13, 2020 · A fire broke out aboard the US Navy amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD6) docked in maintenance at the San Diego naval base. San Diego Fire-Rescue Dept and Harbor Police fire boats assisted in battling the fire
