Established 1971, the VCSD Aviation Unit started with one Bell 47 and grow to nowadays four Hueys ( 205, UH-1H, HH-1H and 212 ). Flight crews are trained in night vision goggle operation, scuba diving, swift water rescue, and emergency medical procedures. They are supplemented on medical/rescue missions by qualified medical personnel consisting of physicians, nurses, and paramedics. Typical missions for the Air Unit includes:

- Search and rescue missions including mountain and water rescue
- Support for agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard, State Lifeguards, etc
- Emergency medical services (EMS) flights
- Firefighting
- Surveillance
- Crime scene photo flights
- Marijuana eradication
- Patrol support missions

Ventura County Sheriff Hangar Retrofitted by All Metal MS, 26-Feb-15 : All Metal MS finalized the completion of a two year project with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit to retrofit their hangar facility to housing their fleet of Bell 205 Helicopters.
