The State Police Aviation Unit was formed on January 1, 1984, to provide for the administration and coordination of the department’s aviation resources. The Unit’s primary mission is to provide aircraft for search, rescue, law enforcement and medical evacuation. The unit utilizes three bases located in Virginia - Richmond, Abingdon, and Lynchburg.
As of 2022, VSP operates 5 Bell 407, 1 EC145, 1 Bell 412EPi and 3 Cessna Turbo Stationairs fixed-wing aircraft
