Marine's Sikorsky S-58 began service as HUS-1 then renamed UH-34D
On September 18, 1962 the United States Department of Defense (DoD)
introduced a unified designation system to all
USAF, US Navy, US Coast Guard, USMC and US Army aircraft
largely based on the one used by the US Air Force from 1948.
NASA's Experimental aircraft was also assigned in the X-series.
