Opened in 1932 as a rival to nearby Stanley Park, the site was selected for expansion by the RAF in the run up to World War II. By 1949 the site had been designated a civil airfield and facilities were improved. Helicopter operations in support of the Morecombe Bay hydrocarbon fields are run by CHC Scotia.
