Opened in 1938 as RAF Cambridge, the RAF had a presence here until c 1957.
Since then, Marshalls has played a major role in the local economy with its large fixed-wing maintenance facility. In 2023, the company was granted planning permission to build state of the art premises at Cranfield, in preparation for the closure of Teversham airfield and its re-development as the site of the Cambridge East estate by Cambridgeshire Council. Marshalls announced in Oct 2025 that its proposed Cranfield move was uneconomic and Cambridge Airport would close by 2028.
Following this decision, East Anglian Air Ambulance has made arrangements to relocate to Fulbourn.
