Hosted elements of 1 Group (RAF Bomber Command) by Jun 1940. By spring 1943 460 Sq (RAAF) took up residence and the Pathfinder force followed by Apr 1944.
RAF Binbrook played a key role during the Cold War as a base for Canberras and later, the QRA Lightning force.
By autumn 1988, the Lightnings had gone and Binbrook was no longer required. After a brief period acting as the base for the shooting of the movie Memphis Belle in 1989, flying effectively ceased. By 1998 the RAF had moved out and by 2012 the runways and hardstandings had been dug over and the new village of Brookenby was being created to the east of the field.
