After a project definition phase which began in Nov 1999, a contract to build the station was let in Jan 2009. The first live data was sent to the Centre for Reporting and Control (CRC) at Monsanto on 9 May 2012.
The station has extended Portuguese national radar coverage well out into the Atlantic improving the effectiveness of SAR operations and Environmental Monitoring and Fisheries Protection and a secondary feed has improved reliability of civilian Air Traffic Services in the area.
