The UK War Office acquired an exisiting Bishops palace in 1886, possibly as a counter to civil unrest brought about by the defeat of Gladstones first Home Rule Bill for Ireland in the House of Commons.

During Operation Banner, it provided a central Belfast base for support of policing and surveillance operations and was known as P012.
