Built in mid 1970s from compacted coral sand, the airfield suffered some damage during the Typhoon season of 2009; a programme began in 2013/2014 to secure the anchorage and repair the airfield.

Rancudo Airfield is on Thitu / Pagasa Island, one of the disputed islands in the Spratly Island Group.
