Left by the Marquess of Bute to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) in the late 1950s, the island, (c 65km west of the Outer Hebrides, towards the edge of the UK continental shelf), is now leased by QinetiQ from NTS. The helipad at the head of Village Bay is used to support the servicing of radar stations (used by the BUTEC Ranges) and by ship-based helicopters of the Fleet exercising in the adjacent waters.
