Camp Lemonnier opened as the home of the US Task Force in the Horn of Africa near the mouth of the strategically important southern choke point to the Red Sea, in May 2003. It shares its main runway with Djibouti / Ambouli International Airport, to the north side.
The base was originally for a French artillery formation but has been expanded and improved by the US since Jan 2007. The Horn of Africa command team moved in from an afloat base on USS Mount Whitney, which had been offshore since Nov 2002.
Since 2008, Camp Lemmonier has also played a vital air support role for the EU naval maritime security Operation Atalanta.
