The Point Arguello Field was discovered in 1980 by Chevron. Construction of the large Hermosa platform (the first in the Santa Maria Basin) began in 1984 and by 1985 the platform was producing from the fractured cherts and dolomites of the Miocene Monterey Formation from almost 8000ft depth.
