Production of natural gas 225 km offshore Nova Scotia began by the Sable Offshore Energy Project (SOEP) in 2000 from five fields near Sable Island ( Venture, South Venture, Thebaud, North Triumph and Alma ). SOEP is operated by ExxonMobil in partnership with Shell, Imperial Oil, Pengrowth Energy and Mosbacher
Gas production has ceased from the Sable Island complex and the well capping and abandonment begun in late 2017 was completed in 2019. Platforms were removed during 2020 and shipped by barge to the UK for demolition..
