Eurocopter Germany took over the task of upgrading Heeresflieger CH-53s

CH-53GS	1999	22 CH-53Gs upgraded with missile countermeasures, improved communications and navigation, and dual external fuel tanks.
CH-53GE	2003	Initially known as the CH-53GSX and ordered to support the Afghanistan deployment.
CH-53GA	2010	Eurocopter Germany upgrade of 40 VFW-Fokker CH-53G with state-of-the-art avionics and communications systems in a new glass cockpit with five multi-function displays, a four-axis autopilot with auto-hover automatic flight control system, as well as an up-to-date electronic warfare system.
