First announced July 2025, the Mil Mi-80 is a proposed next-generation multirole helicopter project by Russia, envisioned as a replacement for the long-serving Mi-8/17 Hip series.
A significant challenge facing the Mi-80 is unresolved funding despite the stated goal of achieving full fleet replacement by 2030. The development is projected to require at least five years once adequate financing is secured.
The design of the Mi-80 is intended to evolve from the
Mi-171A3 offshore platform, incorporating a range of technological enhancements. These include advanced composite rotor blades, a crash-resistant fuel system positioned below the cabin floor, and a redesigned X-shaped tail rotor for improved efficiency.
The helicopter is also expected to feature a modern avionics suite, designed for day and night operations across diverse terrain. The plan includes an increase in the maximum takeoff weight to 14 tons. A key strategic objective of the Mi-80 program is to consolidate manufacturing at the
Kazan Helicopter Plant and
Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant, aiming to standardize production and reduce costs, addressing long-standing issues of fragmentation within the industry.

Based on the Mi-171A3 (an offshore-certified civilian variant), the Mi-80 is expected to include:
