Netherlands ordered 12 maritime NFH and 8 NFH (landscoped) to be operated by 860.DHC. Crew training performed by 7th Squadron and aircraft maintenance by the 990th Squadron.

First operational deployment took place in January 2013 when frigate HNLMS De Ruyter participated in counter-piracy operations around Somalia as part Operation Atalanta.

In 2020, after a fatal accident in the Caribbean, the NH90 fleet was grounded for less than a month .

In December 2025, an order was signed with NAHEMA for three additional NH90 NFH helicopters to be delivered in the latest Block 1 standard, also known as Software Release 3 (SWR3).
