In 1985, the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) ordered eleven Sikorsky S-80M-1, similar to US Navy MH-53E Sea Dragons for aerial mine counter measures. Sikorsky built all 11 airframes, deliveries starting in 1989, replacing seven KV-107/IIA-3 helicopters. One S-80M-1 was lost in an operational accident. The remaining ten are being replaced from 2007 by fourteen MH-101 Merlins.
