Helis, December 05, 2023 - The European Rotors 2023 exhibition this year was at the large IFEMA business centre in Hall 9, c 7.5km NE of the centre of Madrid and just W of Madrid-Barajas International Airport.
As well as helicopter manufacturers Airbus, Bell, Boeing, Enstrom, Konner and Leonardo being here, other organisations offering specialist support services and end-users were also present.
We looked more closely at the DRF Luftrettung stands which combined those specialist services to further their end-user operations and also offer them to others.
DRF Luftrettung is a key part of Europe’s air ambulance services and was here in force, in Madrid for 2023.
Established in January 1972, with first helicopter operations in March 1973, DRF Luftrettung has pushed the envelope of service improvement since then and in its 50th year, DRF Akademie showed its hoistAR® hoist simulator, which it developed in collaboration with Reiser Simulation and Training. This trailer-based unit with realistic platform and load movement, can be optionally linked electronically to the flight simulator at Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT) in Frankfurt, to allow full crew training in a mission environment or run stand-alone for hoist-only training.

The hoistAR® hoist simulator was first shown live at the 3rd International Helicopter Hoist Operation Symposium, which DRF Luftrettung hosted at its Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Operations Centre, earlier in September.
Keeping loads secure is fundamental in preventing the helicopter’s centre of gravity being disturbed in flight and DRF Luftrettung has developed its multifunctional EMS ground plate for these situations.

Innovation has continued in operating practice and with new equipment; DRF Luftrettung is continuing its roll-out of the 5-bladed Airbus H145D3 to service. The flight safety area wasn’t being neglected either, with DRF Luftrettung in receipt of its EASA Supplement Type Certificate (STC) for installations of cockpit voice recorders in the Airbus H135 – to meet EASA regulation CAT.IDE.H.191 for helicopters in a given weight category produced after 5 Sep 2022.
Underpinning its product and service offerings, DRF is accredited for design to Part-21 J EASA CS27/CS29, for manufacturing to Part-21 G LBA, for maintenance to Part-145 and is an Approved Training Organisation for training specialisms (to Part-66 and Part-147).
DRF Luftrettung is also pursuing its goal of being more environmentally friendly, in its pilot project at Magdeburg with operations using Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
DRF’s 50th anniversary celebrations began in Berlin on 18/19 March 2023 with the unveiling of its new helicopter in a special anniversary paint scheme, together with its 56 m2 mobile exhibition space, showcasing the World of Air Rescuers, which is travelling around Germany during the year.
For European Rotors 2023, DRF Luftrettung was at Stand 726 and the DRF Akademie was at Stand 1338.
