Helis, April 04, 2019 - A Spanish Air Force’ Super Puma helicopter successfully completed a medical evacuation some 900 km ~ 485 nm south of Canary Islands.
The helicopter from 82nd Group, 46th Wing based at Gando Airbase in Gran Canaria was supported by a CN235 maritime patrol aircraft.
The Canarias Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) received a request from the national maritime safety agency, Salvamento Maritimo, for a medical evacuation from the Portuguese fishing vessel Joana da Cunha.
Although the Super Puma is equipped with extra fuel tanks in the cabin, it made a refuel stop at Nouadhibou, Mauritania in order to reach the ship and hoist aboard the injured sailor.
The 802nd Rescue Squadron has recently replaced its Super Puma helicopters in use since early 1980s with the newest variant of the model, the H215.
