Harry Robertson, Father of Crashworthy Systems

Dr. S. Harry Robertson, founder of Robertson Fuel Systems, has died at the age of 87. He invented the self-sealing “Robbie Tank” that is credited with saving thousands of lives

Harry Lee Robertson was born May 25, 1929 in Hiddenite, NC. He was a US Army veteran who served in the Korean Conflict. He passed away October 27, 2021 at his home

Robertson Fuel Systems, November 03, 2021 - Robertson Fuel Systems, a HEICO company, sadly announces the passing of Dr. S. Harry Robertson, founder of Robertson Aviation and a pioneer in crash survivable fuel systems.

For the past 50 years, he has been a significant figure in aviation and is recognized as “The Father of the Crashworthy Fuel System.”

Robertson’s life will be celebrated at an invitation only event in Tempe, Arizona, at the Robertson Fuel Systems headquarters.

Robertson invented the iconic “Robbie Tanks” which have saved thousands of lives. “Harry Robertson’s impactful work on creating crash survivable fuel systems for the rotorcraft industry and military forces has saved over 9,000 lives and continues strong for over 43 years,” said Newman Shufflebarger, president of Robertson Fuel Systems.

“Everyone at Robertson is proud to continue Harry’s legacy of saving lives and his absence is a true loss.”

Robertson has received numerous accolades and recognition for his life-saving work. His awards and honors include the Living Legends of Aviation/Ken Ricci Lifetime Aviation Entrepreneur Award, an Inductee into multiple aviation Halls of Fame/San Diego Air & Space Museum HOF, National Aviation HOF, U.S. Army Aviation HOF, and OX5 Aviation Pioneers HOF.

He served on Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Board of Trustees for over 20 years and was honored as a Trustee Emeritus upon leaving the board. Through the years, he was also a member of numerous scientific and professional organizations including AOPA, AHS, AIAA, AAAA, EAA, HAI, ISASI, SAFE, SAE, SETP, and USAC.

In 1976 Harry purchased Pine Springs Ranch in northern Arizona. After retiring from Robertson Fuel Systems, he was able to pursue his second lifetime interest of running a ranch and raising cattle.
