FARNBOROUGH, UK — Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a strategic cooperation agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow to jointly explore propulsion solutions for current and future vertical lift aircraft. The partnership aims to accelerate the development of next-generation helicopters, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and other advanced rotorcraft through closer integration of airframe and engine design.
The agreement was signed by Rich Benton, Vice President and General Manager of Sikorsky, and Cédric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines. The companies said the expanded collaboration will streamline aircraft development by shortening design cycles, accelerating proposal preparation and delivering optimized propulsion solutions for commercial and defense customers worldwide.
The agreement formalizes a broader strategic relationship built on more than 40 years of cooperation. Safran has long supplied engines for the Sikorsky S-76 family, with more than 1,230 engines delivered and nearly 10 million fleet flight hours accumulated worldwide.
Beyond the S-76, the companies intend to identify opportunities across both existing and future rotary-wing platforms, including unmanned aircraft and advanced vertical lift concepts that could benefit from new propulsion architectures.
Preparing Future Propulsion Technologies
The collaboration will evaluate emerging propulsion technologies that can support higher performance, improved efficiency and faster aircraft development. Safran noted that its expertise in both conventional turboshaft engines and hybrid-electric propulsion could contribute to Sikorsky’s future helicopter programs.
Rich Benton, Vice President and General Manager of Sikorsky said "This is a great example of Lockheed Martin’s commitment to partnering with the European industry to enhance the systems we provide that deliver high performance, reliable mission capabilities. When we collaborate across industry from day one, we empower our customers with the speed of decision-making and the confidence that the final aircraft will meet performance, safety and schedule requirements."
Cédric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines said: "We are particularly pleased to have signed this agreement with Sikorsky. Our two companies share a particularly strong history, and our engines have powered several of their helicopters, including notably the S-76. There are still new chapters to be written. As the world leader in helicopter propulsion and pioneer of hybrid-electric propulsion, our products and services would provide an unrivalled competitive advantage for Sikorsky’s future helicopters."
Supporting Future Military and Commercial Aircraft
The announcement comes as aircraft manufacturers increasingly seek integrated propulsion partnerships early in the design process to reduce development risk while meeting evolving operational, environmental and performance requirements. The agreement is expected to support future Sikorsky programs serving both commercial operators and military customers, while also expanding opportunities in the rapidly growing unmanned aircraft sector.
