Armada Española, July 30, 2025 - Assigned to the 14th Aircraft Squadron, the first two helicopters of this class arrived at Rota Naval Base from Albacete.
Rota Naval Base was the scene today, July 30, of the arrival of the first two NH-90 MSPT (Maritime Spanish Transport) helicopters, marking a historic milestone in the modernization of the Spanish Navy’s naval aviation capabilities. The handover ceremony of the new helicopters to the Fleet’s Aircraft Flotilla was held today under the presidency of Admiral Rubén Rodríguez Peña, Chief of the Cádiz Naval Arsenal.
These initial two units will be integrated into the 14th Aircraft Squadron, part of the Aircraft Flotilla, serving as the spearhead of a gradual incorporation process that will reach a total of three units before the end of 2025. An additional four helicopters are scheduled to arrive in 2026, completing a total fleet of seven navalized NH-90 helicopters.
These are the first NH-90s specifically adapted to operate in maritime environments within the Navy, representing a qualitative leap in interoperability, versatility, and operational efficiency. This naval variant is designed for embarked operations, with specialized equipment for maritime missions, including tactical transport for special operations, medical evacuation, amphibious operations, and advanced logistical support.
Since September 2024, personnel from the 14th Squadron—comprising pilots and mechanics responsible for the NH90 helicopters—have undergone training and instruction to ensure a safe and effective transition to this new aerial platform, laying the foundation for its full operational deployment in the naval environment.
