Helis, December 13, 2017 - The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department will add a third helicopter, a Sikorsky S-70i manufactured in Poland.
The San Diego City Council voted unanimously to spend $9.8 million to buy a new firefighting helicopter.
The S-70i will be customized to a Firehawk configuration similar those used by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
SDFD currently operates 2 helicopters, a 1980-built Bell 212 and a 2008 Bell 412EP.
“It has been showing signs of that age. It’s out of service more and more every year. We need larger, more capable aircraft to drop more product", said Chief Brian Fennessy.
