History Tracking
The Chicago Police Department's Aviation Support Unit began in the late 1950s, when Officer Leonard Baldy used a helicopter to report traffic and assist emergency services. Over time, the department formalized aerial operations through its Marine and Helicopter Unit, which provides aerial patrol, emergency support, and law enforcement coordination. The unit operates from the Marine Heliport at 250 N. Breakwater Access Drive. In recent years, it has modernized its fleet, adding a Bell 429 and signing a deal for two Bell 407GXi helicopters to enhance its operational capabilities.
