The Horizon 2020 is a research financial instrument implemented by the European Commission ( the executive branch of the European Union) as the flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness.
Horizon 2020 was the European Union’s flagship research and innovation framework programme for the period 2014–2020, with a total budget of nearly €80 billion. Its objective was to strengthen Europe’s global competitiveness by funding collaborative research across industry, academia, and public institutions, with a strong emphasis on innovation, industrial leadership, and societal challenges. The programme supported a wide range of sectors, including energy, digital technologies, transport, health, and advanced manufacturing.
In the aviation and aerospace domain, Horizon 2020 played a central role in advancing cleaner, safer, and more efficient air transport, notably through large-scale initiatives such as
Clean Sky 2. These projects focused on reducing emissions, noise, and operating costs while accelerating the development of next-generation aircraft technologies, including advanced rotorcraft, hybrid propulsion concepts, and novel configurations such as tiltrotors. Horizon 2020 laid the groundwork for subsequent EU research programmes, including Horizon Europe, which continued many of its strategic priorities.
