united kingdom Wessex (SAR) Flight

Royal Air Force

Formed at RAF Muharraq in December 1967. Commenced SAR operations on Dawn-Dusk standby in January 1968 operating two Wessex HC2 XT601 & XT 604
according to Flying Units of the RAF Search and Rescue Flight, Muharraq was formed in may 1959 and disbanded in may 1961.
The Wessex SAR Flight was formed in December 1967. Believe me I was there.

1971 XT601 was our yellow peril, with various camouflaged back ups from 78 Sqdn Sharjah during maintenance. Left to join 78 Sqdn when Muharraq closed down. Returned to UK Dec 71 -

Joined SAR Flight Muharraq in their last year. For ten months before handing over the base to the Bahrainies, Won the lotto and was transferred to 78 Sdn at Sharjah. From there went to RAF Benson on the VIP Whirlwind flight. Taxi club for high ranking officers during the fuel crisis that year. -
