Opened as a British Army garrison outpost in 1952 near the site of a WWII refugee camp, although planning for the new site had been going on since 1949. The objective was to consolidate 4 nearby camps onto one soverign base site and protect the air defence and communication station at Agios Nikolaos.

During 1960 a new tarmac strip was laid to accommodate the Austers of 653 Squadron which were to move in shortly afterwards. It was soon apparent that a seasonal crosswind was present and the unit built itself a 400m gravel strip to deal with this.
