This large moorland site was originally opened in the late 1950s as part of Britains Ballistic Missile test programme. In 1972 it became part of the Proof and Experimental Establishment for instrumentation and testing.

In 1976 the site was re-purposed as an RAF station and operated as a joint electronic warfare facility with US forces. In 2000, sole operation by the RAF was assumed.
