The original Cork Hospital helipad was closed in 2003, when building for its new Accident and Emergency Department began. The vision was for a new pad to be built on the site, but there have been a number of false starts, delaying the project. A Nov 2018 planning application has stalled while further information is being sought on safety and noise mitigation arrangements. As of Mar 2019, transfers use
Cork Airport or the playing fields of Bishopstown GAA or
Highfield Rugby Club, both about 0.5nm away by road.
The arrangement to land emergency helicopters on the Bishopstown GAA pitches has been terminated and work is due to start in Apr 2019 on improving the temporary landing site at Highfields Rugby Club, while further funds are sought for a permanent solution.
