When the Accident and Emergency Department extension work started at nearby
Cork University Hospital in 2003, it was soon realised that a 10 to 15 minute ambulance transfer from
Cork Airport was unsatisfactory in some cases of acute need. An arrangement was reached with the Rugby Club adjacent to the Hospital, to use its pitches in an emergency. An ambulance is still required for the 0.5nm road trip, but this has at least reduced the transfer time to around 3 minutes. The
GardaĆ are usually in attendance to ensure that the pitch is cleared in time for the landing.
With the termination of a parallel agreement with Bishopstown GAA in Apr 2019, further work is being undertaken here to improve the existing temporary facilities while the Health Service Executive (Southern Region) seeks further funding for a permanent Emergency HLS on the Hospital site.
