When the Accident and Emergency Department extension work started at nearby Cork University Hospital in 2003, it was soon realised that a 10 to 15 minute ambulance transfer from Cork Airport was unsatisfactory in some cases of acute need. An arrangement was reached with the Rugby Club adjacent to the Hospital, to use its pitches in an emergency. An ambulance is still required for the 0.5nm road trip, but this has at least reduced the transfer time to around 3 minutes. The Gardaí are usually in attendance to ensure that the pitch is cleared in time for the landing.
