The light was electrified in 1952 and automated in 1990. The station was converted to Solar Power in 2015. The helipad is c 30m NW of the tower.
The Longstone was famously home to William Darling (the keeper) and Grace (his daughter), who on 7 Sep 1838 risked everything to rescue survivors from the wreck of the paddle-steamer ss Forfarshire.
