Initially an RAF Fighter Command base and satellite during WWII. From Dec 1943 until Mar 1945 the USAAF 9th Air Force were based here, returning to RAF control in 1945. During 1952, sequences for the movie The Sound Barrier were filmed here. The RAF withdrew in 1954 and the base was used for trials of early jet aircraft by at least Vickers-Supermarine and Folland until 1961 when major flying ceased.
There was a brief interlude from c 1979 to c 1981/2 when some crop-spray equipped Hillers of Agricopter Ltd operated from here, but the main activity since 1963 has been by the prominent Radio Observatory antennae, originally part of the Radio Research Station.
