The Schiehallion field was discovered in Upper Paleocene sandstones of the Vaila sequence, in 1993, with the seabed at c 400m of water. The adjacent Loyal field to the north, in rocks of a similar age, was discovered in 1994.
The first Schiehallion oil was produced in Jul 1998. The field was shut down in 2013, while options were being considered for a redevelopment programme.
